Quirky and uncategorisable

These paintings defy neat categorisation. Some of these are one-off experiments. Others might be the start of something. They’re moments of quirky intensity – something serendipitous or unexpectedly beautiful. They are stories, deeply personal or philosophical reflections, or just moments with my children on holiday. They reflect my ongoing commitment to notice what I notice, and show you what I notice, if you’re inclined to look.

Based on the Herman Charles Bosman story, the Venus/muse of the veld steps barefoot toward the artist’s cottage, naked and luminous. Wild dogs waltzing symbolise fidelity, but to a wilder self. At her ear, a Cinnyris Mariquensis humming bird flits

A parallel to the Younger Dryas – 12,900 to 11,700 years ago – a time of floods, fire, and upheaval. But this time, the catastrophe is manmade.

Now he’s gone – but here my wonderful dad is, mid-sentence, leaning in toward Leonardo da Vinci’s famous profile portrait, debating brushstrokes and divine proportions like it’s just another Tuesday. The angel is keeping him safe in heaven.

A moment of absurd whimsy and parental poetry. When Kathy asked, “When will my baby sister be born?” the answer was always the same: “She will be born when the jacarandas bloom.” And so she was. a celebration of music, confusion, gratuitous patterns and violet trees.
