Your face deserves more than a filter…
In a time when photos abound and we constantly see ourselves with our photo smiles, showing our best side, or getting caught candidly on a bad hair day or mid-mouthful, the painted portrait shows it’s true value. While I don’t begrudge you that heroic attempt to look casually flawless, I believe you deserve to be truly seen, not just looked at. Photos only capture a millisecond of light falling across the face, but in paint, one can search for the soul. As a portrait painter, I try to capture not only a true likeness, but also a glimpse or more of that soul in the depths behind the eyes, the humour in the quirk of a lip, the distinctive tilt to the chin and why not just a smidgeon of enhancement while I’m at it?
Let’s be honest: no one ever looked deep in a selfie.
